One soldier killed as troops repel Boko Haram, ISWAP attack in Borno

According to the report, the terrorists launched the attack at about 11:55 p.m. on Tuesday but were swiftly engaged by troops. A reinforcement team later joined the operation and engaged the insurgents in a clearance operation.

Military sources told Zagazola that several terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, while one soldier paid the supreme price and another sustained injuries. The wounded personnel has since been evacuated for medical attention, while the fallen soldier’s remains were deposited at the 7 Division Military Morgue in Maiduguri.

Items recovered from the insurgents include an AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 25 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two Baofeng radios, and belted ammunition for a machine gun.

The sources added that the terrorists, who withdrew in disarray, were believed to have suffered heavy casualties, though the exact figure could not be immediately confirmed.

They further explained that the general security situation in the area remains calm but unpredictable.

2027: I’m not plotting for VP slot – Bauchi Gov Bala Mohammed

Sed ut perspiciatis unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperiam.

Bauchi State State Governor, Bala Mohammed has denied speculations that he is positioning himself for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, vice-presidential slot in the 2027 general elections.

The Bauchi governor made this rebuttal in an interview on Channels Television, where he spoke extensively on the party’s zoning decision, internal dynamics and preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.

“I am not withdrawing because I want to prepare myself for the vice presidency. Of course, if it is within the consensus of our party leaders and the presidential candidate to choose me.

“I am ready. But certainly, if I am not given it, I will give my maximum support to whoever emerges,” Mohammed said.

Speaking on reports suggesting that the PDP was working on a joint ticket featuring Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as presidential candidate with himself as running mate, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governors’ Forum said the speculations were unfounded.

“I and Seyi have never discussed the issue of pairing. What we have mentioned is the issue of taking over power by the grace of God so that we can give Nigerians the opportunity of good governance in 2027 and beyond,” he stated.

Judge warns alleged Boko Haram leader Al-Barnawi, terror suspects against shunning court sessions

The Federal High Court in Abuja has warned Mohammed Usman, also known as Khalid Al-Barnawi, an alleged leader of the Boko Haram dissident splinter group Ansaru, and four other suspects against absenting themselves from court sessions.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the warning on Tuesday following the absence of Mr Al-Barnawi, the first defendant, and his lawyer in court.

Mr Nwite also ordered the counsel and the defendants to show up at the next hearing date fixed for September 5.

Mr Al-Barnawi is being prosecuted on terrorism-related charges along with other suspected members of his group.

Other co-defendants include Mohammed Bashir Saleh; Umar Mohammed Bello, a.k.a. Datti; Mohammmed Salisu; and Yakubu Nuhu, a.k.a. Bello Maishayi.

They are, among others, accused of being members of the Ansaru terrorist group, also known as Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan.

The defendants are also alleged to have conspired among themselves to carry out acts of terrorism between 2011 and 2013 in Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and other states in the northern part of the country.

Upon resuming the trial on Tuesday, the prosecuting lawyer, Alex Izinyon, SAN, told the court that the case was scheduled for continuation of proceedings in the trial-within-a-trial.

Mr Izinyon, however, said that the first defendant (Usman) and his lawyer were not in court.

He further observed that lawyers for two other defendants were also not in court.

The lawyer told the court that Mr Al-Barnawi’s lawyer, who claimed to be away in Enugu,  promised to send a representative but failed to do so.

Mr Izinyon expressed concern that the absence of the 1st defendant and the defence lawyers was unpleasant to the resolve of the court to accelerate the hearing in the 13-year trial.

He said the absence of the defence lawyers without communicating to the court was disrespectful.

Lawyer to Messrs Bello and Nuhu (3rd and 4th defendants), Abdulkarim Audu, equally submitted that the proceedings would have to be rescheduled in view of the absence of the 1st defendant and the defence lawyers.

Both lawyers, however, urged the court to grant a short adjournment to enable parties to make progress in the case within the ongoing vacation of the court.

Mr Nwite expressed displeasure over the absence of the 1st defendant and some of the defence lawyers in court.

According to the judge, it is unfortunate that the scenario is playing out when the effort is to ensure an expeditious hearing of the matter.

He said, “This court will not condone the attitude of the 1st defendant or any of the defendants in absenting themselves from the proceedings.’’

The judge directed lawyers and parties to work together to address what informed the absence of Mr Al-Barnawi and other defence lawyers to prevent further delay in the case.

Mr Nwite then adjourned the matter until September 5 and 12 for continuation of evidence of the 3rd prosecution witness (PW3) and the playing of the videos in the trial-within-trial.

The U.S. had, in 2012, placed a $5 million (£3.5 million) bounty on Mr Al-Barnawi’s head after branding him one of three Nigerian “specially designated global terrorists.”

Mr Ansaru is said to be ideologically aligned to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and is also accused of killing a number of Westerners.

Mr Ansaru was reported to have claimed that it carried out an attack on a maximum-security prison in Abuja in 2012, during which dozens of inmates were freed.
